Liberal Arts 12A

The value of a liberal arts education depends are who you are. For some people, it may be a waste of time while others find it very helpful. Someone who knows what they want to do for a living, may not like a liberal art education because it allows for less focus on their intended major. If someone wants to be a High School math teacher, they may not want to take the time to study a required course like biology. Some people want to just dedicate their entire time at college to their intended major. Like me, I don’t want to waste time studying zoology or something like that. I want to study history, and if I could, I would dedicate all of my time to that instead.

Others may not think like that. They may think that college is a good time to experience new classes. They may want to take other courses to see what they like and to test out new classes. They may find that they like doing something else more than they like their original idea. But like I said, it's based on who you are. http://rendezvous.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/22/two-views-on-liberal-arts/ This blog, from the New York Times states that "Liberal arts is founded on a whole person, developing a person athletically and educationally". I think this is true. Because everyone is different, we can't say that Liberal arts works for everyone. It depends on what each individual wants to learn. You can force people to take liberal arts, but it doesn’t mean that everyone will get the same experiences or the same knowledge. I think that Liberal arts programs should be optional in college. Because at the moment, I feel like I'm paying for an education that southern wants me to have. Not an education I want to have.
